Sir, 'What is happening to Tenby?' asks the astute 'regular visitor' to our town (Tenby Observer, Friday, January 16). What indeed! The answer is quite simple, we have a county council that never seriously consults or listens to the people of Tenby and environs. We have had, quite recently, the issue of placing the Salterns refuse facilities to New Hedges alongside Brooklands Nursing Home which has very seriously ill and vulnerable residents, and the council only caved in following a public outcry. We have also had the underhand way in which we were conned regarding the closure of Tenby Cottage Hospital, with the promise of a new hospital in Gas Lane, which would have several beds, and a Minor Injuries Unit. What happened? No beds and no longer a Minor Injuries Unit. Our 'regular visitor' to Tenby is quite correct in being concerned that Tenby is becoming the Poundland, of Pembrokeshire, which, in time, will result in losing its long history of being the 'jewel in the crown' of Pembrokeshire. What is required in Tenby is to replace the cinema, which was originally on that site. You only have to look to Carmarthen and Milford Haven, both of which have a thriving cinema and, in the case of Milford Haven, also a theatre. I have been told that there has been no take-up regarding replacing the cinema. How hard did the council try to entice a cinema company to this 'jewel in the crown' town? A facility which I am sure would be more than welcome to the thousands of visitors during the summer, and to our locals during the winter season. As our 'regular visitor' mentioned, 'the town is looking cheaper and cheaper' every time he and his family visit. So I ask the council to try harder to attract a cinema which would be more than welcome to all. It could be called the 'Poundland Cinema! Now that's an attraction!
Michael Doyle,
Penally.
