Last Sunday, the Feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, the congregation arrived at Jeffreyston to find the church decorated with birthday banners and balloons reflecting the party theme of the day.
The Rector, Fr. Pau,l presided and preached at the Eucharist, assisted by Mr. Graham Thomas. The Rev. Sylvia Temple presided and preached at Lawrenny and at Reynalton, the Rev. Sylvia Temple presided at the Eucharist and the Rector preached.
The Gospel reading was from John Ch 15 vv26-27 - Ch 16 vv4b-15.
The Bible and history provide us with many examples of what Christians can do and be in the power of God's Spirit. The Spirit testifies, convicts and guides, not acting alone, but with the Father and the Son to bring glory to God. We live in hope because we live in God's presence and purpose to create and renew with the Spirit who reminds us and renews in us the words and life of Jesus. God's kingdom will come and his will be done.
Before the last hymn was sung, Alice read the prayer for the Sunday School, the Rector having shown the congregation the birthday cards that the members of the Sunday School had made depicting the gifts of the Spirit - understanding, joy, patience, love, reverence, courage and kindness.
At Jeffreyston, continuing the party theme, the birthday cake was beautifully made by Miss Janet Williams, the candles were lit by Henry, Iolo and Chloe and after singing 'Happy Birthday', the candles were blown out by Carys and Lucy. The cake was then shared with the congregation in celebration of the birthday of the Church.
At 6 pm, Evensong was said at Loveston Church by Mr. Robert Lewis, lay reader.
At the commencement of the service, a Miners Prayer was read out by the Rector, followed by prayers for the family and friends of those who were killed in the Loveston Colliery Disaster of 1937. The names of those who died in the tragedy were read from the memorial situate within the church.
Tomorrow (Saturday), from 2.30 pm, Mrs. Gill Williams will be hosting an 'Open Garden' at her home at Mini Haven, Landshipping, with proceeds raised for Cancer Research. All welcome.
This Sunday, Trinity Sunday, services will be 10.30 am Eucharist and Sunday School at Jeffreyston; 10.45 am at Lawrenny and 12.15 pm at Loveston. A warm welcome extended to all.
