The Rector, Fr. Paul, led the morning Eucharist service in Jeffreyston Church on Sunday, which was Trinity Sunday, or the first Sunday of Pentecost. The preacher was the Rev. David Hammond.
The readings were Isaiah 6.vv 1 - 8; Romans 8.vv 12 - 17. The Gospel reading was John 3.vv 1 - 17, where we read of Nicodemus visiting Jesus, also the way to eternal life in John 3.16.
In his sermon, Rev. David gave an interesting talk on the mystery of The Trinity. He said that God was all around, not only 'out there', but also inside us. He encouraged us to think of the fruit of the indwelling spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, as shown in St. Paul's letter to the Galatians and to try and live our lives according to these ideals.
When the Sunday School joined us Fr. Paul was proud to show us the lovely coloured worksheets which they had made. They had also been busy making paper triangles showing the words: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
After this, Lorna beautifully read the closing prayer based on the Trinity.
Fr. Paul led Evensong in Jeffreyston Church. The earlier readings were repeated.
In a wide ranging sermon, Fr. Paul took as his text verse 9 of the Gospel reading "Nicodemus said to him 'How can this be'." Fr. Paul spoke about the confusion of Nicodemus over being born again. Fr. Paul referenced the words of Jesus shown in John 3.verse16 'For God so loved the world that He gave his only son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life'.
Services for this Sunday are: 10.30 am - Eucharist and Sunday School, Jeffreyston; 12 noon - Eucharist, Reynalton; 6 pm - Evening of celebration for the new organ and hymn books, East Williamston. All are welcome.
