The Rector, Fr. Paul, led the morning Eucharist service in Jeffreyston Church on Sunday, the third of Epiphany. The readings were Isaiah 49.vv 1-7; 1. Corinthians 1.vv 1-9. The Gospel reading was John 1.vv 29-42, where we read of Jesus being the Lamb of God. For his sermon, Fr. Paul chose, as a text, verse 29 of the Gospel reading, 'The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"'. In his sermon, Fr. Paul explained the custom in those days for the compensation for sins of the people. Every morning and evening, a lamb was sacrificed in the temple, but in Isaiah 53:7 it was prophesied that the Messiah, God's servant, would be led to the slaughter, like a lamb, to pay the penalty for our sins. Fr. Paul went on to say that we have an understanding of God who loves us, as shown by the Holy Spirit dwelling in the hearts of those who accept Him. At the end of the service, Fr. Paul was proud to show examples of the cleverly made fan-tailed paper doves, made in the Sunday School, indicating the Holy Spirit. Hannah then led us in the closing prayer, which was based on this. This Sunday, January 27, the professional biblical story teller, Ron Baker, will attend East Williamston Church at the morning Eucharist service. His very interesting input will replace the sermon.
