The Rector, Fr. Paul, led the morning Eucharist service in Jeffreyston Church on December 30, the first Sunday after Christmas. The readings were Isaiah 63 vv7-9, Hebrews 2 vv10-18. The Gospel reading was Mathew 2 vv13 -23, where we read of the escape to Egypt; the massacre of the infants and the return from Egypt. For his sermon, Fr. Paul chose words from verse 23 of the Gospel reading, "he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth." In an interesting sermon, Fr. Paul said that the Holy Family was like us, with similar problems in life to contend with. He reminded us that God can call us for His service when we least expect it. Fr. Paul led the evening service of Lessons and Carols held in St. James' Church, Reynalton, which was full to capacity for the occasion. On entering the church, we were each given a well-prepared service booklet. After each of the eight lessons, we were treated to well-performed readings and musical items. The final lesson, number nine, was read by Fr. Paul before the final prayers. Those taking part were: church bell ringers - Rebecca James and Eleri George; readers - Thomas Jones, David White, Edward Jones, Janet Williams, Linda Thomas, Brian Miller, Moreen Bennett and Daphne Gwyther; poetry - Sue Birch; singing with guitar - Isabel Merriman; clarinet and flute - Jack and Emily Tranter (accompanied by Val Evans). At the end of the service, we were treated to lovely refreshments by the faithful ladies of the church. The services for this Sunday, December 6, are: 9 am Eucharist - East Williamston; 10.30 am Eucharist - Jeffreyston; 12 noon Eucharist - Loveston; 6 pm Evensong - Jeffreyston.
