Jeffreyston Church was full to capacity last Thursday morning, for the special service of confirmation for 14 young persons and one adult, with the Bishop of St. David's, the Right Reverend Carl Cooper. The candidates for confirmation and their sponsors were joined by family and friends and pupils and staff of St. Oswald's VA School, as well as regular Jeffreyston church members. For the service, we used a special booklet entitled 'Baptism and Confirmation within the service of Holy Eucharist'. After the Rector, Fr. Paul had welcomed everyone, the readings were: Isaiah 43.vv 1-3 and 6-7, 1. Corinthians 12.vv 12-13. The Gospel reading was John 3.vv 1-8, where we read of Jesus teaching Nicodemus about Salvation. We then witnessed the Baptism of Alexandra and Joseph. In his sermon, Bishop Carl explained the significance of baptism and confirmation, emphasising that we are all important in the sight of God. Fr. Paul led the Sunday morning service in Jeffreyston Church, which was a service of baptism for baby Nyah Julie Elliot, as well as Eucharist. The readings were Jeremiah 23.vv 1-6, 2. Colossians 1.vv 11-20. The Gospel reading was Luke 23.vv 33-43 where we read of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Baby Nyah Julie Elliot was then baptised, being supported by her parents and godparents. In his homily, Fr. Paul explained the significance of baptism, drawing attention to words from verses 11 and 12 of John chapter 1, 'He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become children of God'. At the end of the service, Fr. Paul said that in the Sunday School a lovely pudding mixture had been made, for this was 'Stir up Sunday' when everyone leaving the church was invited to stir the mixture and say a prayer. Lorna led us in the closing prayer. Rev. Sylvia Temple was the celebrant at the Eucharist service which followed in St. James' Church, Reynalton. The preacher was Fr. Paul. The earlier readings were repeated. In his interesting sermon, Fr. Paul took as his text verse 42 of the Gospel reading, then he said, 'Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom'. Fr. Paul explained about the confusion caused when authority is lost and he posed the question, 'Do we accept the authority of Jesus in our lives?'. Fr. Paul led the evening Eucharist service in Jeffreyston Church, assisted by Bob Lewis. The morning readings were repeated and in his sermon Fr. Paul expanded on the teaching from Luke 23. Fr. Paul explained that we had the Gospel account of the crucifixion to show the great love that Jesus has for us, adding that despite the hatred shown towards him, Jesus remained strong for us. Everyone is welcome to attend the Christmas Fayre to be held in the Jeffreyston Church Hall tomorrow (Saturday), starting at 10.30 am. There will be various stalls and a visit from Father Christmas. All proceeds go to the churches in our group. TV celebrity Hywel James, of 'Farming Focus' and 'The Good Food Show', will be joining us at the fayre when he will launch Gillian's Cookery Book. Services for this Sunday are: 9 am - Eucharist, East Williamston; 10.30 am - Eucharist, also Sunday School, Jeffreyston; 6 pm - Advent Carol Service, Jeffreyston.
