The Rector, Fr. Paul, led the morning Eucharist service in Jeffreyston Church on Sunday, the ninth after Pentecost. The readings were: Hosea 1.vv 2 -10, Colossians 2.vv 6-15. The Gospel reading was Luke 11.vv 1-13, where the congregation read of Jesus's teaching on prayer. For his sermon, Fr. Paul chose a text, words from verse 13 of the reading from Luke 11 " . . . how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Fr. Paul said that when we pray and struggle to find the right words, our loving God understands. He added that the best example of prayer was given by Jesus in the Gospel reading 'When you pray, say Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread; and forgive us; and lead us not into temptation'. At the end of the service, Fr. Paul was proud to show the congregation the coloured in sheets made in the Sunday School, showing the Lord's Prayer. Then, the whole Sunday School came out to the front of the church and, led by Vali, they read out the Lord's Prayer with actions. At the kind invitation of Janet and Stephen Williams, Evensong at Bubbleton Cottage, Cresswell Quay, was led by Fr. Paul assisted by Bob Lewis. The special speaker was Rev. David Faulkner. The Gospel reading was Luke chapter 10 vv38-end, which tells of the visit of Jesus to the home of Martha and Mary. For his sermon, Rev. Faulkner took as his text words from verse 40 of the Gospel reading 'Tell her them to help me'. Rev. Faulkner explored the various lessons arising from the Gospel and urged us to examine our own lives for those duties which may be classed as 'urgent' or 'essential'. At the end of the service, everyone enjoyed sumptuous refreshments. On Sunday, August 12, we are all is invited to an entertaining afternoon at Catershill Farm, Reynalton, for strawberry tea, this to raise funds for Reynalton Church. The church services for August 5 are: 9 am - Eucharist, East Williamston; 10.30 am - Eucharist and Sunday School, Jeffreyston; 12 noon - Eucharist, Loveston; 6 pm - Evensong, Jeffreyston.
