The Rector, Fr. Paul, led the morning Eucharist Service in Jeffreyston Church on Sunday, the second of Lent. The readings were Genesis 15. vv1-12 and 17 verses 18; Philippians 3. verse 17 and 4. verse 1. The Gospel reading was Luke 13. vv 31-35, where we read of Jesus expressing sorrow for Jerusalem. For his sermon, Fr. Paul chose as a text words from verse 34 of the Gospel reading 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing'. In discussing the Gospel reading, Fr. Paul said that God loves us and gathers us like the hen. He added that God laments when we do wrong. At the end of the service, all the children came out to the front of the church to lead the closing prayer and Fr. Paul was proud to show the congregation the work done by the Sunday School, with cleverly made cards showing a colourful hen with her brood depicting the message of the Gospel of the day. Evensong in Jeffreyston Church was led by Fr. Paul, assisted by Bob Lewis, who also was the preacher. The Old Testament reading was from Genesis chapter 17 and the New Testament reading was the Gospel of the day from Luke chapter 13. For his sermon, Bob chose words from verse 34, 'You were not willing'. In an interesting sermon, he encouraged us to keep our faith, bringing all our problems to God our Maker, who will respond as He sees fit. Thanks were expressed to all who contributed to and supported the Cawl Supper held in Jeffreyston Church Hall on St. David's Day. A total of £170 was raised for Mothers' Union funds. The Lent Lunches, with proceeds to Christian Aid, are planned as follows: Friday, March 9, in Jeffreyston Church Hall; Friday, March 16, in Jeffreyston Church Hall; Friday, March 23, at the Carew Inn; Friday, March 30, in Jeffreyston Church Hall.
