Rev. David Faulkner was the celebrant and the Rector, Fr. Paul, was the preacher, at the morning Eucharist service in Jeffreyston Church on Sunday, the third before Lent. It was also a day of Celebration for Candlemass, when baby Jesus was presented in the Temple in Jerusalem. During the service, a candle was lit, and this was passed around to everyone to light their candle, as a celebration of Candlemass. The readings were: Ezekiel 43, verse 27, and 44, verse 4; 1. Corinthians 13. The Gospel reading was Luke 2, vv 22-40, where we read of baby Jesus in the Temple with his parents. As a text for his sermon, Fr. Paul took words from verse 35 of the Gospel reading, 'a sword will pierce through your own soul also'. During the interpretation of the readings, Fr. Paul said that unconditional love was the greatest gift a parent could give, adding that our Lord had unconditional love for each one of us. At the end of the service, Fr. Paul was proud to show the congregation the work done by the Sunday School, with cleverly made cards showing beautifully coloured candles to celebrate Candlemass, as described in the reading from the Gospel of Luke. The closing prayer, which embraced the theme of the day, was read by George. Evensong in Jeffreyston Church was led by Rev. David Faulkner. The Old Testament reading was from Malachi 3, vv 1-5, and the New Testament reading was from the Gospel of the day, Luke chapter 2. For his sermon, Rev. Faulkner chose for his text verse 2 from the reading from Malachi, 'But who can endure the day of his coming and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap'. In an interesting sermon, Rev. Faulkner said that we would be purified by God as we put out trust and faith in Him.
