The Rector, Fr. Paul, led the Eucharist services on the fifth Sunday in Lent, also known as Passion Sunday. The readings were Ezekiel 37 vv1-14, and Romans 8 vv6-11. The Gospel reading was John 11 vv1-45, where we read of Jesus meeting Martha and Mary and the raising from the dead of their brother Lazarus. For his sermon, Fr. Paul highlighted words from verse 44 of the Gospel reading 'Unbind him, and let him go'. In explaining the readings, Fr. Paul said that in the same way God restored the dry bones in the reading from Ezekiel, so we learn from the Gospel reading that we have salvation by living and believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Here was a happy atmosphere in Lawrenny Church for the family service led by Rev. Sylvia Temple and Fr. Paul, the theme of which was sacrifice. After the welcome and opening hymn, Max clearly read out from the Gospel of Matthew chapter 16 verses 21-end, where we hear of Jesus predicting his death and resurrection. In the short address that followed, Fr. Paul and Rev. Sylvia were assisted by George in explaining the meaning of sharing and sacrifice. Later, Jessica, Hannah and Lorna beautifully read out the prayers. At the end of the service, coffee and squash were provided. The collection from this service is to be given to a charity supporting Cerebral Palsy. Thanks were expressed for the sum of £115, which was raised at the Lent Lunch held at Masterland Farm, Broadmoor. Catherine and Brian have arranged the remaining Lent Lunch (12.30 - 2 pm) for today (Friday) in Jeffreyston Church Hall. The cost of the meal is £2.50. All are welcome! The total money raised is being sent on to Christian Aid. Note: During Lent, mid-day prayers are held in Jeffreyston Church starting at 12 noon each day. All are welcome! This Sunday we meet in the car park at the Jeffreyston Inn, when the palm crosses will be blessed by the Rector, before our procession to the church. Services for Palm Sunday are: 9 am Eucharist, East Williamston; 10.20 am all assemble outside Jeffreyston Inn, for start of procession with palms to church; 10.30 am Eucharist and Sunday School, Jeffreyston; 12 noon Eucharist, Loveston; 6 pm Eucharist, Jeffreyston.
