The Rector, Fr. Paul, assisted by Bob Lewis led the United Parishes Eucharist Service on Sunday - the 12th after Trinity. The readings were Isaiah 35.vv3-6a, Acts 18.vv24-end. The Gospel reading was Mark 7.vv31-end, where we read of Jesus, showing humility, healing the deaf and mute man. As a text for his well presented sermon, Bob chose words from verse 37 of the Gospel reading, "He has done all things well." Bob explained that Jesus asked the people to tell no one about the healing of the deaf and mute man because He didn't want to be seen simply as a miracle worker, adding that Christians are happy helping others, without praise for their efforts. Bob said that we should not be so concerned about what Jesus can do for us that we neglect to hear the real meaning of his message. Thanks are expressed to all who supported and helped at the Martletwy Show church stand. The sum of £300 was raised for Christian Aid. The winners of the raffle were: 1. Derek Scourfield; 2. Brian and Catherine Millar; 3. Geoff Evans; 4. Jill Lewis. Fr. Paul led 'Evensong in the Garden' held at Bubbleton Cottage, Cresswell Quay, following the kind invitation of Janet and Stephen Williams. There was good attendance and rousing singing to the accompaniment of piano accordion and trumpet. The guest speaker was the Rev. David Faulkner. The readings were from 1 Kings and 1 Timothy. For the text for his thought-provoking sermon, Rev. Faulkner chose words from verse 27 of 1 Kings, chapter 8, "The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!" Rev. Faulkner said that we must not think of God being confined to any place of worship, which will deteriorate in time, rather to think of God of the universe living in our hearts, adding that we need to be receptive to his calling. After the service, we were treated to sumptuous refreshments. On September 12, a concert by the Quaynotes will be held in Jeffreyston Church in order to raise funds for East Williamston Church. The church services for this Sunday, September 5, are: 9 am - Eucharist, East Williamston; 10.30 am - Eucharist and Sunday School, Jeffreyston; 12 noon - Eucharist, Loveston; 6 pm - Evensong, Jeffreyston.
