A LOCAL woman is celebrating after winning the Pembrokeshire Adult Learner of the Year Award.
Jean Thomas from Dale won the award for her dedication to learning whilst studying through the STEP Program at Pembrokeshire College.
Nominated for the award due to her efforts in bringing her local community together to enjoy learning new skills, it is thanks to Jean that more than 10 courses have been delivered through the STEP Project to the people of Dale, Marloes and St. Ishmaels.
Jean is also involved in knitting hats for chemotherapy patients at Withybush Hospital and tirelessly fund-raises for Parkinson's. Jean also has links with a leper colony in India, where some of the work the groups create is sent.
One of Jean's tutors from Pembrokeshire College commented: "I am full of admiration for Jean who, despite illness, is tireless in her efforts to organise and inspire so many people. She thinks of everything and has all the information at her fingertips. She has certainly made it very easy and enjoyable to teach on the STEP program - she even makes sure we have excellent biscuits!"
Adult Learner of the Year awards are presented in each of Wales' 22 counties to coincide with Adult Learners' Week, the UK's largest festival and celebration of adult learning, co-ordinated by NIACE Dysgu Cymru, which is celebrating 25 years of promoting adult learning in Wales.
Jean was chosen by the Pembrokeshire Learning Festival group and received her award in a special ceremony held at The Coal Exchange in Cardiff Bay. Hosted by Claire Summers and Chris Corcoran from BBC Wales, the evening started with a dinner and culminated in the winners being presented with their certificates.
Richard Spear, director of NIACE Dysgu Cymru, said: "Jean and the other award winners around the country have achieved a great deal, some overcoming serious obstacles to pursue their learning.
"They are also representatives of the thousands of people achieving success through learning right across Wales."
