AN entertaining evening is in store at Lampeter House, Lampeter Velfrey, next Wednesday, August 16, with the welcome appearance of Don Weller and the John Gibbon Trio. Don Weller is one of Britain's leading saxophonists, a composer, arranger, and source of inspiration to many aspiring players. UK Jazz has known plenty of tenor sax originals -Ronnie Scott, Bobby Wellins, Courtney Pine and Andy Sheppard, to mention a few, but Don Weller may be the greatest of all. He is an effortlessly inventive original who has played with Count Basie and Gil Evans, besides leading his own small and large bands. As mentioned, he appears with John Gibbon, owner of the legendary Gibbs Club in Abergavenny. Gibbon has been credited as the person responsible for bringing some of the best known names in International Jazz to Wales - Georgie Fame, Ronnie Scott, Ken Peplowski and Art Themen, to name a few. The group consists of Don Weller, tenor sax, John Gibbon, drums, Erika Lyons, double bass, and Brian Waite on piano. Weller comes hotfoot from Brecon Jazz Festival and the chance to see him perform in an idyllic garden setting should be one of the highlights of the summer. Just added to the bill for this special event, meanwhile, is West Wales premier saxophonist, Jim Luxton, together with John Biggs on piano. This fine duo will entertain the audience with a selection of tunes originally played in the 1940s by the classic duo of Ruby Braff (on cornet) and Ellis Larkins, piano. Jim Luxton will play soprano for this special performance. Gates open 7 pm, with the show starting at 8 pm Tickets are £10/£9 members and concessions and are available from Span Arts 01834 869323 http://www.lampeterhouse.com">www.lampeterhouse.com.
