Sir, On Sunday last, we were treated to some virtuoso trumpet playing of the highest quality when the Steve Waterman Quartet visited Tenby to perform at the Caffe Vista. Steve, alternating between trumpet and flugel horn, was joined by a dynamic young Welsh rhythm section of Dan Messore on guitar, Pete Komor - bass and Gethin Jones - drums. A large part of the evening's music was drawn from two of Steve's albums - Buddy Bolden 'Blew It' and 'October Arrival'. The 'Blew It' tunes were dedicated to some of the outstanding jazz trumpet players of the 20th century and Steve provided a masterclass in the varied trumpet styles of those players; from the latin-infused melody of 'Little Sunflower' by Freddie Hubbard, via the bell-like sounds of Clifford Brown's 'Sandu', and the playful harmonies of Clark Terry's 'Haig and Haig', to a blistering rendition of Miles Davis's 'All Blues' from the best-selling jazz album of all time 'Kind of Blue'. Steve's tribute to Buddy Bolden was self-penned and entitled 'Red Vest Man' - a classic New Orleans funeral march which ends in joyful chaos! On a balmy summer's evening, the tunes from 'October Arrival' were tinged with a reflective taste of autumn and included the title track from the album and 'Destination Unknown,' another self-penned number. The quiet, ballad-style of Steve Waterman's flugel horn were on show for these pieces, in part amusingly complemented by a fireworks fiesta from the Tenby Harbour fun night! Throughout the entire evening, an appreciative and captivated, capacity audience applauded the superb rhythm section for their outstanding support to Steve's horn playing. What a gig; let there be more like this in Tenby, and Yanni, of the Caffe Vista, must be congratulated on putting on such a feast for music lovers.

Brian Williams,

Tenby.
