Sir,
Further to last week's story 'More speed camera sites announced', how refreshing to read the comments of Mr. Huw Roberts, Pembrokeshire County Council's director of transportation and environment.
I am most heartened to see just how seriously he takes the issue of speeding traffic, and the measures being employed to reduce casualties on our roads of Pembrokeshire.
His comments 'Speed is often a factor in accidents'. Well done Mr. Roberts, your comments are highly commendable.
However, I would, through the medium of your newspaper, challenge Mr. Roberts to state as to why he and his officers at Pembrokeshire County Council find it so difficult to support, and are so opposed to the introduction of a 40 mph speed limit on the narrow stretch of the A4139 road between Jameston and Biercross. Where at present our primary school children have to walk to school without a footpath to walk on; these children are exposed on a daily basis to speeding vehicles, who are legally entitled to drive at the national speed limit of 60 mph.
No doubt Mr. Roberts will try to argue that you cannot have a 40 mph limit because we have no qualifying accident record, as we have been fortunate enough not to have had an accident as yet. It would appear Mr. Roberts and his officers have difficulty in recognising what is a perceived risk, in order not to create a qualifying accident record.
I for one can not help but wonder if Mr. Roberts and Pembrokeshire County Council are more interested in the extra revenue that these camera vans will raise, than the real issue of road safety in our communities of Pembrokeshire.
Mr. A. L. Wales,
North Norton,
Manorbier.
