LEADING Aircraftsman James North recently returned to 948 (Haverfordwest and St. David's) Squadron Air Training Corps to give his old squadron members a briefing about his new career in the Royal Air Force.
James is halfway to completing his basic training as a Gunner within the Royal Air Force Regiment, having joined in January 2008.
In a few weeks time, he will be posted to the Queen's Colour Squadron (63 Squadron, RAF Regt), who are renowned for their ability to perform complex drill movements without a word of command. This unit also provides the escort and guard for the Queen's colour of the Royal Air Force. In an operational role, they have completed a number of active tours in the world's trouble-spots.
James, when asked by his former fellow-cadets, stated that being a cadet had stood him in good stead and that he "enjoyed a lot of the corps activities, but drill and being taught to iron his own clothes were very useful."
James is the son of Andrew North, of Kilgetty, who himself holds the position as treasurer of the civilian committee. The purpose of the committee is to ensure local independent non-military control of the squadron and achieve the very necessary task of fund-raising.
The squadron is always looking for new recruits, both cadets and the civilian committee. Contact can be made with Flight Lieutenant Andrew Clark on 07786415734 or details can be found on the web: [email protected]">[email protected]
