Pet owners in Pembrokeshire will be able to get free health checks for their dogs next month. PDSA, the UK's leading veterinary charity, is offering the health check-ups at a series of one- day roadshows around the county. The doggie MOTs will cover general fitness, as well as key health concerns such as pet obesity and dental disease. And, as well as health checks for dogs, the charity is also offering free advice about other pets. The Dogs Trust will also be present at the roadshows and, in addition to offering advice on dog welfare, will be providing a limited service for the micro-chipping of the animals. The roadshows, which have been organised in partnership with Pembrokeshire County Council, will be visiting the following venues in the county: Wednesday, July 9 - The Salterns, Tenby; Thursday, July 10 - Commons car park, Pembroke; Friday, July 11 - Meads Leisure Centre, Milford; Saturday, July 12 - West Street car park, Fishguard; Sunday, July 13 - County Show Ground, Haverfordwest. Pet owners can turn up, but an appointment system (likely to be a numbered queue) may be employed if the demand is great. Veterinary staff for PDSA have been visiting venues across the country offering free dog health checks for six years and their Petcheck vehicles are on the road from late March until the end of October every year. By the end of the 2007, the programme had carried out 17,139 health checks on dogs, given some 8,320 pieces of pet care advice and seen 99,678 visitors.
