Sir,
In the issue dated Friday, January 11, under the heading 'Pembrokeshire wind for Pembrokeshire people', Janet Roberts stated that in a poll taken in April 2012, 66 per cent weere in favour of wind turbines with only eight per cent against.
I wonder what the result would have been if the people polled had been aware of the following. At the beginning of 2012 there were 3,872 turbines on 356 wind farms in total capable of generating an annual 16billionkWh of electricity, comparable to the recently commissioned CCGT Pembroke Power Station at 15billionkWh.
This represents just 4.4 per cent of the UK's annual requirements. Each turbine contributing just 0.0011 per cent to the overall electricity requirements with a correspondingly minute contribution to reducing the overall carbon footprint.
Compared with the turbines deployed on wind farms, single site turbines will be up to an order of magnitude smaller, can the resulting contribution to our electricity needs and carbon reduction really justify any visual intrusion? The financial incentive of FITS may be attractive to the individual, but is of no benefit to the community at large,
Lionel J White CEng MIET,
Cresselly.
