On a weekend when Alastair Brownlee virtually carried his brother over the line in the World Triathlon Race in Mexico, it was nice to see something ‘similar’ happen during the Ironman Wales.

“I was sitting capturing the race with the camera when I spotted a young lady, obviously in trouble and thought it would only be a matter of time before someone came to her rescue,” said photographer Susan McKehon. “However, probably with other competitors’ personal best times on their minds, I was on the point of rushing to her assistance when ‘lo and behold’ out of the blue came competitor No. 1699 - Lee Milward, of Telford, alias Sion Jenkins, of Sageston!

“Sion had stepped in at the last moment when Lee’s place became available, even though it was his wife’s birthday! Sion sacrificed seconds off his time and stopped to check whether everything was OK or whether she needed further assistance, before he went on his way to finish in 12 hours 57 minutes 43 seconds. It was a lovely touch and we hope Sion had a hero’s welcome when he went over the finish line!”
