TV wildlife presenter Iolo Williams was welcomed to Saundersfoot CP School on Tuesday to officially open their new outdoor classroom - The Roundhouse. Ecology expert Iolo congratulated the school on such a wonderful achievement in creating an outstanding outdoor classroom and facility for the future. "The roundhouse is a marvellous addition to your school and I'm sure that it will be used a great deal by not only the pupils here now, but for generations to come, and help them with their nature studies," said Iolo. "You have a wonderful outdoor area at the school, with plenty of woodland and trees. Who knows, maybe one of you could go on to replace me or even become the next David Attenborough," the BBC Wales conservationist told the pupils. Back in August of 2007, staff, parents, grandparents and friends began the construction of a timber-framed outdoor education classroom, which quickly became known affectionately within the school as the 'Roundhouse'. Under the enthusiastic and expert eyes of designer and project manager, teacher Mick Booth and his right-hand man Bill Swales, the team laboured day, night and weekends throughout autumn, winter and spring and in all weathers! At 10 metres in diameter, the Roundhouse can accommodate all the children in the school (currently 320), plus staff, and still have room to spare. Money for the project was raised through sponsorship from Saundersfoot New Year's Day Swim, school funds and one very generous and anonymous donation of £2,000. The entire project is estimated to have cost around £8,000, but a huge thank you has to go to all individuals and companies who donated materials, labour and time. A particular thank you goes to Edmundson Electrical Ltd., of Milford Haven, who supplied all the electrical equipment needed and also Chevron for their kind donation of £1,000. Teacher Mick Booth thanked everyone involved on behalf of the school, calling them "a quality team throughout", while the school's deputy head, Jane Edwards, thanked Mr. Booth for all his hard work on the project.
