International judges from the Communities in Bloom competition were welcomed to Tenby this week, with the resort banking on flower power to help enjoy success in the event.

Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organisation committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility, beautification and to improving quality of life through community participation and a national challenge.

The national edition of the competition, sees a worldwide challenge involving communities from the USA, Europe and Asia, being evaluated on the accomplishments of their entire community, with key criteria such as - tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape, turf and groundcovers, floral displays and community involvement, being assessed by judges.

Tenby is participating in the 'international challenge' category along with - Abbeyshrule, Ireland; Community of Fogo, Newfoundland and Labrador; Jasper, Alberta; Stettler, Alberta; Antigonish, Nova Scotia; Lakeside Chautauqua, Ohio USA; Stanghow, United Kingdom.

Tenby in Bloom chairman, Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, who has been spearheading the town's campaign, said it was a huge honour for the resort to be invited to take part in the competition, especially as the town was one of only two UK entrants in the event.

Once again the Tenby in Bloom committee has worked alongside Pembrokeshire County Council and Tenby Town Council, as they have done for the Britain In Bloom contests in the past, to prepare for the Communities in Bloom competition.

The Communities in Bloom judges, Evelyn Alemanni from Escondido, California, and Steve Preston from Brampton, Ontario, were in town on Wednesday to evaluate the resort.

The results will be announced at the National Awards Ceremonies, in Ottawa-Gatineau, Canada's Capital Region, from October 23 to 26.
