The circumstances relating to the untimely death of a 15-year-old Greenhill schoolboy were related before Mr. Michael Howells, coroner for Pembrokeshire, during an inquest held at Milford Haven Town Hall on Thursday of last week.
The coroner's officer, Mr. Jeremy Davies, reported that Oliver Haydn Edwards-Cavill was discovered on November 4 last in a sitting position hanging by a belt attached to the handle inside the bathroom door of a caravan, in which he lived.
Mr. Davies explained that the extended family had lived, for some four months, in a cluster of three caravans on the grandparents' smallholding at Dyffryn, Llawhaden.
He went on to report that Oliver's mother had picked him up as usual from the school bus at Canaston Bridge when, to all intents, he appeared to be his normal, happy self.
As was the norm, he later helped around the farm, including feeding some of the animals and later in the evening, after a meal and watching some television, an argument arose over a chess game and he was sent to his caravan.
When his mother later looked in on him, she found that he was not in his bed and after opening the bathroom door, with great difficulty, she made the tragic discovery.
Attempts were immediately made to revive the boy, including efforts by a neighbour, Mr. Martin Perkins, and the police, before the paramedics arrived, but all to no avail.
Normally a caring lad who got on well with a wide circle of friends, there was no history of any illness, depression or other medical problems, concluded Mr. Davies.
Summing up, the coroner revealed that a note in Oliver's handwriting was found indicating that he intended to take his own life.
In a agreeing with a suggestion from the family that he must have taken this action in a fit of temper, Mr. Howells commented: "It's a dreadful thing for the family. I feel desperately sorry for them and understand that it must be difficult for them to live with what has happened."
In returning a narrative verdict, the coroner declared that Oliver had died from self-inflicted asphyxiation.
