Although the weather conspired to spoil the game with consistent drizzle, which turned the ball into a bar of soap, Whitland dominated all facets of this match on Tuesday evening. Indeed, their defence never looked like being breached, as they ran out comfortable winners by 25 points to three.
The only downside for the local support was seeing second row Molitika stretchered from the field with suspected knee ligament damage, but an x-ray in hospital gave better news, and he should soon return to the number five jersey.
Whitland opened the scoring with an Aled Davies penalty after four minutes.
In the 25th minute, the Borderers scored their first try. After putting the Llangennech scrum under pressure on their 22-metre line, second row Ben Armstrong picked up the loose ball and drove to the line, where he slipped a nice pass to number eight Randall Williams, who crashed over for an unconverted try.
Llangennech's only points of the game came in the 29th minute when outside-half Mark Jones landed a penalty kick to leave the half-time score 8-3.
The second half saw Whitland with the advantage of the wind, and with their pack dominant in lineout, scrum and loose play, the outcome of the game was in no doubt.
Whitland scored their second try when Mike Buckingham pounced on a loose pass in the midfield and hacked the ball through before gathering and crossing under the posts. No. 10 Aled Davies adding the extra two points from the conversion.
Whitland followed this up five minutes later with their third try by back row forward Johnny Koloi. Again loose play by the Llangennech forwards saw Whitland's prop Gareth Williams kick the ball deep into the opposition's 22, finding touch some eight metres from the line. Llangennech failed to secure the lineout ball and man-of-the-match Phil Morgan pounced and drove forward before passing on for Koloi to touch down. Again Davies kicked the conversion.
Replacement outside-half Scott Penny added a further penalty to leave Whitland victorious by 25 points to three.
