Sir,

On reading your correspondent's letter (Observer,September 8), I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!

The Information Centre at Kilgetty is not run or financed by the county council. It has no funding or support from them - or Wales Tourist Board. After the arbitrary closure by the council in 1996, it has been paid for out of the pockets of members of the Landsker Borderlands Tourism Association.

Like all such centres, it runs at a loss since you can't charge for information. It serves the local community and visitors alike, with the dedicated staff working up to nine hours a day, and has a telephone service manned live by a volunteer 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

Given the exposed position of the building, the two flags catch the wind in every direction, and inevitably wear out fairly quickly. Since our funds are strictly limited, we cannot afford industrial quality flags, however a donation of two new flags by your aggrieved correspondent would be most welcome!

We could then ask one of our volunteers to find the time to fly them for us - after voluntarily (and at their own expense) replacing the 'worm-eaten pole' of course!

Mike Weaver, Dunes Riding Centre, Martletwy.
