A new name appeared on the Woodridge Squash Club trophy when the finals were completed last weekend.
Several weeks of earlier rounds had seen the experienced and beginners thrash it out for the chance of competing in the finals.
Saturday saw Steve Rigby, after disposing of Graham Longster, and Gerald John, defeating Dave Crowley in the semi-finals, take centre stage in what turned out to be an enthralling final played at a high standard and pace.
Steve, playing in a rich vein of form at the moment, ran out the eventual winner, proving too strong for Gerald on the night.
Alongside the main tournament, a plate competition saw the final bring Johnny Lee and Debbie Chedoka together.
Johnny, the club's most improved player, took the first game, with both players producing quality squash and good retrieving. The second game saw Debbie use all her experience to move Johnny around court, resulting in too many errors.
In the final game, Johnny's fitness and shot-making proved to be the decisive factor and he ran out a worthy winner. In this form it won't be long before his name will be on the main trophy.
Dave Edwards, of the sponsors E and C. Redwinds, presented the trophies.
The evening was finished off with an excellent dinner.
Many thanks go to Bob and all the staff at the Woodridge Inn.
