‘Important decisions’ will need to be considered soon for certain communities across Pembrokeshire as maintaining coastal defences becomes increasingly challenging, a local county councillor has stated.

The Sustainable Costal Communities Initiative was presented to Pembrokeshire County Council recently to consider how communities around the coast may need to adapt with climate change.

Speaking on the matter, county councillor for Saundersfoot’s south ward, Cllr Chris Williams said: “The individuals involved are resolute that community involvement from the off is imperative.

“A significant amount of work has been completed by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, not least through the development of the Shoreline Management Plans SMP, and the more recent SMP refresh process.

“However, there’s a recognition that much of the development thus far has been reactive rather than pre-emptive.

“Maintaining coastal defences and sustaining communities remains a priority, but in some areas this will become an increasing challenge.

“In areas such as Amroth, important decisions will need to be made sooner. In other areas, such as Saundersfoot, there is more thinking time,” he continued.

“Historically, Pembrokeshire goes well beyond the more traditional approach to flood and coastal erosion risk, and as an authority we are keen to demonstrate leadership on this issue.

“Nationally there is a greater awareness for this, and the need for community engagement, Pembrokeshire are keen to demonstrate leadership on this.

“Your opinion is sought because community involvement is a priority, whether through individuals or organisations,” added Cllr Williams.
