A salvage operation was sparked this week after a quantity of refrigerators and raisins was washed up by the current on separate isolated South Pembrokeshire beaches. Around 30 to 40 of the kitchen appliances were in a shipping container that was smashed to smithereens at Precipe Bay, near Manorbier, while millions of raisins, both packaged and loose, began littering the shoreline at Caldey Island, after their carrier was beached on the monastic isle. The containers are believed to have come from the container ship 'Ryfjell' which reported losing cargo overboard in bad weather 35 miles south west on St. Anne's Head last week when it was making its way from Dublin to Avonmouth. After being alerted by a member of the public, who spotted the damaged refrigerators strewn over the beach and rocks at Precipe Bay on Sunday afternoon, Milford Haven Coastguards contacted the local authority and Receivers of Wrecks to make arrangements to clear the debris. A spokesman for Pembrokeshire County Council said that the clean-up operation could prove tricky as the beach was difficult to reach over land. "It might have to be done by sea and will probably require specialist help," said a spokesman. "There are concerns from a shipping hazard point of view and public safety in case children become trapped inside them or people cut themselves on sharp bits of metal," the spokesman continued. "We hope to recover them as soon as we can, but we have been advised by the receivers of wrecks to wait to see if the owners of the cargo want to clean it up themselves," the spokesman added.
