On Saturday, May 24, experts, both local and from Wales and the UK, will give talks and discuss the practicalities of installing hydro power schemes for individuals and groups. The event is organised by PLANED in association with Pembrokeshire's Community Energy Network. Water power is seen as the Cinderella of renewable technologies, it is really practical, but gets little attention. One reason is that there are no high-profile debates about its visual impact, another that it tends to produce a reliable constant low quantity of energy compared to wind. In fact, hydro power has been around for centuries and flowing water produces the most renewable energy in the world. Speaker Richard Drover, UK expert, who has installed medium and high head hydro in Scotland and Wales for five years will provide case history examples, both on and off-grid. Gideon Carpenter, Environment Agency Wales, will give the regulatory context and information on hydrology, abstraction licensing, consents, passage for migratory fish and fish screening. Matt Lees from the EcoCentre will give some historic context, explain how hydropower works, head and flow, wheels and turbines, how much you get out from different flows, and comment on the grants available. Alice Goldstone represents Talybont on Usk Community Hydro Scheme. She will talk about setting up a community scheme, and how they get funding. Jamie Ashe, a local installer, will talk about his practical experiences and look briefly at the potential for small-scale hydro in West Wales based on our stream and river-scape. There is also a short film about renewable installations in this area showing life-style adaptations, individuals and communities powered by sun, wind and water. Peter Davies, Welsh Assembly Climate Commission and Sustainable Development Forum, will chair the day. A very full programme, but with plenty of time for networking and questions. There is the chance to tour the water powered flour mill, Y Felin, before the end of the day. Tours cost £2 - contact Jo to book. All are welcome at the Hydro day which is from 10 am - 4 pm in St. Dogmaels Memorial Hall. To book a place, please ring Jo Brookman on (01834) 862119.
