Sir, When I read the article, 'In town without your car day', in last week's Observer, I made two assumptions. One, All Fool's Day was early, and two, Pembrokeshire County Council had adopted irony in a big way.

It was indeed ironic to see Clr. Brian Hall with a tandem outside County Hall saying: "If we all substituted one car journey to work or town a week by walking, then we could make a real contribution to reducing congestion in towns."

This advice from a person who has claimed a total of £9,700 in the financial year 2004/05, which was 25 per cent of the total claimed by all 60 councillors. At the same time, he collected a further £1,100 from the Fire Authority; adding a further 2,200 miles to the 19,400 he drove on county council business.
