The people of Tenby and holidaymakers to the area have eaten their way through thousands of pounds worth of Welsh cakes this year.

Baked by four stalwart members of St. Johns Church, Elly Craig, Winifred Hewlings, Ruth Mardon and Brenda Harris, the twice weekly event on the church forecourt raised the staggering sum of over £4,000, during the spring and summer months.

At a special presentation on Tuesday, the cooks were delighted to present St. Johns minister, Rev. Nanette Lewis-Head, with a cheque for £2,375.40 for church funds, and Tenby-based paramedic, Phil Thomas, with a £500 donation for the Air Ambulance Wales, which he also serves on.

As well as making further donations to St. Johns by making Welsh cakes at the Daffodil Festival and May Bank Holiday Victorian Fun Day, the ladies raised nearly £800 for various charities, including the Fire Brigade, Tenby Museum and Friends of the Community.

Although the sale of Welsh cakes has now finished for the winter, the griddles will be back in action at the church's Daffodil Festival being staged to coincide with St. David's Day at the beginning of March.

Elly, Winifred, Brenda and Ruth would like to thank all the members of St. Johns who have supported them during the year with donations of dough and offers of help, particularly Pat Taylor, as well as everyone who has purchased Welsh cakes and helped them raise such a superb sum of money.
