Following a recent unannounced cleanliness spot check by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) to Withybush and South Pembrokeshire Hospitals, a report was published on Wednesday.

The visit to the hospitals is part of rolling programme of unannounced cleanliness spot checks being undertaken by HIW.

The report confirms that the overall level of cleanliness on the wards visited was acceptable and two wards were identified as having very good standards of cleanliness.

The standard of maintenance on the wards was also generally adequate and hand hygiene practice was observed as being acceptable. Most staff spoken to during the visit had also complete infection control training within the last 12 months.

However, the inappropriate storage of equipment and clutter was noted in a number of areas within both hospitals, e.g. utility rooms, bathrooms, clinical areas, dining room and day rooms.

Such inappropriate storage of equipment reduces the ability to clean effectively and the Trust must take action to address these issues.
