Was it a point gained or was it two points lost? This was the debate among the Kilgetty supporters following a well contested game of football in the crispy cold sunshine of this January afternoon.

Kilgetty will be kicking themselves for conceding the two points after finding themselves 3-1 up late into the second half. On the other hand, Manorbier will also be disappointed that they did not steal victory when a free-kick, awarded against Stuart Walley on the edge of the Kilgetty area, was hammered against the right-hand upright, only to be scrambled away to safety before the final whistle.

The opening exchanges gave Manorbier the edge as they looked lively in attack and kept Kilgetty pinned in their own half for most of the time. The first goal, when it came, however, was scored by Kilgetty. Play had developed down their left flank and Jamie Morgan used his trusty left foot, with the sun behind him, to fire the ball, for the second week running, into the right-hand corner of the opposition's net.

It was not long before Manorbier responded in like manner. They gained a free-kick which was sent low across the six-yard box to connect with an attacking foot. The rebound returned the ball to the opposite post to be headed wide.

The danger signs were there and this move was followed by an attack on their right-hand touchline. Jamie Morgan lost possession on the halfway line and the ball was pushed wide forward on the right. The winger turned inside and fired in a low cross, which was struck by a Manorbier boot to slide in under Christian Phillips' body.

The rest of the first half was an evenly-contested affair, with play, and chances, flowing from one end of the pitch to the other.

Manorbier mounted some promising attacking moves, only to be thwarted by a determined Kilgetty defence. The commanding voice of Bobby Bevan, back after recovering from his injury, was the key to their resistance as they scrambled the ball away from some good crosses.

At the other end, Kilgetty mounted their own attacks, spurred on by the success of their opening goal. Paul Mansbridge stroked a great crossfield pass to Adam Thorn, who rounded the 'keeper and crossed the ball, only to see it headed out for a corner.

In another good move, Adam held the ball up and gave Ollie Griffiths the chance to double the tally, but he put it wide of the post. Bobby Bevan also shot wide after he received a delayed pass from Paul Mansbridge.

Kilgetty's second goal was the result of a corner kick on the right. Darren Rossiter crossed to the near post, where Jamie Morgan took advantage of a failure to clear the ball and side-footed it into the net.

Similar opportunities were missed on the Manorbier side when Phil Kidney fired a shot across the goalmouth for the number four to mishit it.

The second half began in much the same vein, with Kilgetty trying to capitalise on their one goal lead. Adam Thorn was as tenacious as ever and early on he worked hard to gain some space and create a run on goal.

Unfortunately, he ignored the good run of Jamie on his left and hit a tame shot against the centre half's legs.

From a Kilgetty corner, Darren Rossiter found Paul Mansbridge with a short pass. The resulting cross found the head of Bobbie Bevan who failed to find the target.

Manorbier were equally as unlucky - the bravery and quick thinking of Christian spoiled the opportunity presented to their number nine, while a free-kick on the left was curled into the far post, headed on target and cleared off the line.

Against the run of play, Kilgetty scored an opportunist goal to extend their lead to 3-1. A back pass was viciously sliced by the Manorbier 'keeper and the quick reaction by Ollie Griffiths enabled him to capitalise with a run and simple tap in.

Undeterred, Manorbier showed their strength and determination for the remainder of the game. They were the fitter of the two teams and demonstrated this with their sharpness, tackling and tenacity, forcing Kilgetty into errors in their own half.

An under-hit back pass by Paul Mansbridge put Christian under pressure as he charged out to commit a foul on the edge of the box. The resulting free-kick was scrambled clear.

A Manorbier short corner was hit into the far post and knocked in for their second goal.

The pressure was such that a third goal was conceded only minutes later. A free-kick from inside their own half was sent on a diagonal path into the penalty box where it was expertly brought down and despatched into the back of the net.

The game was level and Manorbier looked the more likely to take the points as they continued to win possession in midfield and press forward.

And they came close to doing so with that final free-kick, but the game finally ended at three goals apiece and both teams walked off thinking that they could have ended up with the three points. Such is the game of football!
