Whitland 1st XV 23 pts. Llangennech 23
Llangennech's outside-half Jonathan Griffiths opened the scoring for the visitors with a penalty after four minutes of this National League division one west clash. Whitland hit back some four minutes later. With Llangennech attacking, centre and man-of-the- match Lee Glanville tackled his opposite number just outside his 22, ripped the ball and took off upfield, running some 50 metres before giving the try-scoring pass to left winger Cristiaan Roets. The try went unconverted, leaving the score at 5-3. Llangennech regained the lead after 23 minutes when winger Michael Davies touched down for an unconverted try. But once again the Borderers responded and within five minutes had got their own noses back in front. Again Glanville broke through the defence before being brought down just short, but good support from the forwards saw the ball quickly recycled for scrum-half Luke Marsh to feed fly-half Aled Davies and he in turn threw out a long pass to centre Matthew Hughes, who touched down for another unconverted try. With some seven minutes of the half remaining, Whitland second row Aled Evans was yellow-carded for stamping, and some three minutes later was followed to the sidelines by both number 13s, Lee Glanville and Steven Davies, who were sin-binned by the referee after a slight altercation. Llangennech regained the lead right on half-time when hooker Simon Delaney scored a try in the top corner and Griffiths added the two points with a successful conversion to leave the interval score 15-10 in the visitors' favour. Five minutes into the second half, the lead was extended when centre Mark Bowen scored an unconverted try. But Whitland soon cut the deficit with a try by their own centre Lee Glanville. This resulted from a quick tap penalty by skipper and number eight Randall Williams, which saw the Borderers drive deep into Llangennech's 22, where quick recycled ball enabled Glanville to burst through the defence to touch down for another unconverted try. In what was proving a see-saw encounter, the visitors again increased their lead to eight points when outside-half Griffiths was successful with his second penalty of the afternoon, having narrowly missed one some four minutes earlier. Whitland hit back with some 15 minutes to go when replacement fullback Matthew John broke from deep, and with Cristiaan Roets taking the ball deep into Llangennech's 22, Randall Williams was on hand to receive a try scoring pass. Again the touchdown went unconverted, but five minutes from time, Aled Davies was successful with a penalty to bring the scores level. Although Llangennech were reduced to 14 men after this, when prop Gareth Morgan was yellow- carded for stamping, Whitland failed to take advantage of the situation and in the end, despite outscoring the visitors by four tries to three, were happy with a point after an indifferent performance. Llangennech, meanwhile, were disappointed not to take all three points, especially with Griffiths shaving the posts with a late drop goal attempt.
