After a disappointing loss to Whitchurch last week Pembrokeshire bounced back into their winning ways this week against the Cardiff Medical Students.

Back into the team and fully recovered came midfielder Tim Lounds and centre back Andy Steer with Sean Irving still absent.

The Medics started the game at a furious pace and put Pembs under considerable pressure but the Pembs defence was outstanding with tight marking by Nigel Thomas, Huw Hanniford, Chris Rogers and Andy Steer with Simon Moseley sweeping up at the back.

Pembs only took nine minutes to get settled in when a ball from Bernie Wheeler found Jamie Smith 20 yards from the opposition's goal. Smith, with plenty still to do, waltzed into the semi-circle taking on and rounding three of the Medics defence before slotting the ball past the 'keeper to finish off a fine individual effort.

Despite one or two counter attacks in the first half the Medics were unable to penetrate the Pembs defence and goalkeeper Dave Miller was only troubled on one occasion from a strike at goal.

Pushing forward, Pembs were caught out but Hanniford made a superb run back into defence to get a touch on the ball before the Medics striker entered the circle. The Medics' resulting long corner was intercepted by Moseley and with a long ball found Kendrick who put Lounds into space to feed Smith for his second.

Pembs' third came from Thomas and Woods linking down the right. Woods, who left the Medics defence for dead on many occasions with his bursts of speed down the right flank, was put into space by Thomas. Woods pulled the ball into the Circle from the back line to set up Ian Fordham who converted well to increase Pembrokeshire's lead to three-nil.

Pembs continued to pressure the Medics' goal throughout the remainder of the first half, with several short corners saved well by the Medics 'keeper and Smith hitting the post.

From the restart the Medics came back into the game and an infringement in the home side's circle led to a penalty corner being awarded from which the Medics converted to make the score 3 -1.

Pembs, despite being in control of the game, were punished yet again when another penalty corner was awarded to the Medics. A miss-hit shot at goal saw the ball go under Miller who had anticipated a harder hit, with the score now 3-2.

Pembs now grabbed hold of the game and came back with two further goals.

Thomas, again linking with Woods at a long corner, brought Fordham into play and his penetrating run into the circle resulted in a short corner from which Wheeler saw his strike at goal deflected past the keeper by Woods.

The second goal came from Stear collecting the ball on the halfway line and linking with Kendrick who was fouled just outside the circle. Lounds, who had found himself unmarked on the penalty spot, deflected Wheeler's free hit past the 'keeper.

Tom Colley, back from the Army, made his first appearance of the season coming on for Hanniford with 10 minutes to go.

This win leaves Pembrokeshire still one point off the top spot in South Wales Division One, behind Bridgend.

PEMBROKESHIRE A nil

Pembrokeshire Hockey Club travelled to take on Cardiff at the National Sports Centre on Saturday. The team contained a few changes from the team that beat Whitchurch 2-1 at Pembroke last week.

Both teams appeared evenly matched as proved so. Neither team appeared like breaking the deadlock except when Beynon appeared out of nowhere to find the end of Moore's pass only to see his shot go narrowly outside the goal post.

The first half ended goal-less.

The second half played out in much the same way as the first half. Despite having the majority of the possession in this half, Pembrokeshire were unable to get the goal that would settle the game.

It was in the last minutes that the game came alive. A save from Kenniford saw a break away that resulted in a short corner being awarded in favour of the visitors. As the time ran out the move had to be completed. D. Ferguson played the ball to Beynon who stopped it and passed it to T. Ferguson. He in turn passed it to McCarthy who shot at goal only to see his effort parried by the 'keeper. Moore found the rebound and was also unable to find the back of the net. As soon as the move broke down, the game was over.

The game ended goal-less and Pembrokeshire still find themselves in fifth position on the table.
