The Rotary Club of Tenby was highly privileged to have local historian and artist, Mr. George Lewis, of Pembroke, as guest speaker at the Rotary Club's September dinner meeting.

George, along with his wife Jeanne, are the artists who have created the magnificent murals in Pembroke Town Hall that depict the history of the town of Pembroke from around 1200BC to the current day.

George's fascinating talk, with the accompaniment of slides, showed how they had gone about creating the informative, highly decorative and colourful murals, and also spoke of the characters and scenes depicted in the murals, bringing to life the history of the town and its people to his highly appreciative audience.

Rotarian Dr. John Bowen gave a sincere vote of thanks to George for coming to speak to the club, and said all present had learnt a fascinating insight into the history of the former county town, and the important part it has played in the history of the nation.

Following his talk, George presented Rotarians with a copy of the pictorial guide to 'The Pembroke Town Hall Murals', which has been produced by Pembroke Town Council, and is available for purchase by visitors at the Town Hall.

Viewing of the murals in the public areas of Pembroke Town Hall is free of charge, and is highly recommended for all, and certainly Tenby Rotarians will be keen to take a closer look, be it for the first time or as a further visit with the knowledge and enthusiasm of George's talk fresh in their mind.

The local community is extremely fortunate that George and Jeanne have produced these murals, which will be there for generations to come, and hearty congratulations are due to all involved in the project.

George also spoke of the 500 pages of manuscript that he has written chronicling the history of Pembroke, as depicted in the murals, and the Rotary Club wishes him every success as he endeavours to find a publisher.

The enthusiasm George showed for his subject and his undoubted knowledge would make the book an important and entertaining resource.
