Sir, My father, the late Fred Brenchley, owned Clifton Rock for approximately 40 years. During that time it became obvious that if the entrance in the wall to Clifton Rock could be enlarged, it would enable him to utilise the lawn and garden area much more efficiently. Before undertaking any work, he applied for permission, which was refused - the grounds being that the wall and the blocked arches were an important part of the history of Tenby. This he fully accepted and the wall remained as it was and indeed repaired and maintained over the years at his own expense. I am sorry to see that the wall has now been vandalised, but pleased to see that it is not beyond repair. Retrospective permission to alter the wall should not be given. The only change that I can see since my father applied is that, because of age, the wall is even more historic. It must be reinstated as it was, under the supervision of qualified historical architects. If not, the precedent may be there for the owners of the premises that abut the main town wall to 'improve' their properties and apply retrospectively.
