A 25-year-old man was arrested by police on suspicion of arson following a fire which closed the centre of Tenby on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters from the town were alerted to the blaze which broke out in a flat above the Woolworths store on Tudor Square, at 2.40 pm.

One person managed to escape to the roof of the Northcliffe House property and had to be rescued by firefighters. The casualty was later conveyed to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest by ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation and was later discharged.

Fire crews from Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest also attended the scene and 10 firefighters with breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to deal with the incident.

High Street and a section of Tudor Square were closed to traffic by police to enable emergency services to get to the scene.

Staff and customers at Woolworths were quickly evacuated from the store, while Shoe Zone and Julian Graves also had to be closed in order for the fire service and police to make the area safe.

The road into the town was re-opened shortly after 6 pm, while fire crews remained at the scene until 8 pm to ensure that the building was made safe.

The cause of the blaze is not known at this stage and under investigation, while the man arrested has been bailed pending further enquiries.
