A packed hall at Netherwood School thoroughly enjoyed an evening of debate put on by pupils of Greenhill and Netherwood Schools last Tuesday. Nine teams of senior students competed in the local Youth Speaks competition, staged by the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot and co-ordinated by youth activities chairman, Stewart Treharne. A series of interesting topics were debated and each team provided a chairperson, a proposer and a seconder for each motion. It was left to the judges, Bill Snellgrove (chairman), Rosemary Tippett-Maudsley and David Owen, to select winners for best team performance, best chairperson, best proposer and best opposer for their debate topics. After much deliberation, winners were chosen from a high standard set by all teams. They were: best team - Heather Whittaker (chairman), Holly Thomas (proposer) and Gabby Rees (opposer) from Greenhill School; best solo performance - Heather Whittaker (chairman), Jenny Hall (proposer), of Greenhill, and Astrid Bowen (opposer) from Netherwood. Prizes were awarded by president Howard Griffiths, while MC was Peter Williams, both of the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot. The club wishes to extend its gratitude to the principal, Mr. Huw Morris, and staff of Netherwood for hosting the event, to the staff and pupils of both schools for their dedication, to all the parents and relatives that attended, as well as to all three judges. The winning team will now go on to compete in the area competitions.
