Soroptimists International Tenby and District held one of their favourite annual events recently, welcoming teams from Greenhill School to compete in the public speaking contest.

Club members welcomed Mrs. Lindsay Radion, a longstanding friend of the club, with two teams from Year 9 to their meeting at the Cambrian Hotel, Saundersfoot.

As usual, the subjects chosen were highly controversial and thought-provoking with Team A (Daniel Fredriksson, Matthew Watkins and Lizzie Hall) debating 'Everyone wants to live forever', while Team B (Carys Bromby, Tessa Burke and Iona Hartshorn) tackled the case of 'Animals love being in zoos'.

The standard of not only public speaking, but also the background research and consideration given to the subjects was incredibly high, making the judges' decision very hard to make. After serious debate on that subject, Team B was adjudged the winner, but all agreed it was a very close call.

Club member, Doreen Hammersley thanked not only the participants, but also Mrs. Radion and her colleague, Mr Calvin Williams, for coaching and organising the teams.

The next event is the club AGM and handover dinner on Tuesday, April 20, again at the Cambrian. Members are reminded to contact the social secretary if they have not already done so to confirm.

The evening will also see the handover of donations to her nominated charities by president Mary Megarry in her last act as club president before handing over to Jan Griffiths for what will be a busy year as the club approaches its 50th birthday next year.
