Heatherton Indoor Bowling Club's 12th annual tournament, which reached an exciting conclusion at the weekend, saw the highest number of entries and an exceptionally high standard of bowling. The two-week event was organised and run by Mike Gouldingay, ably assisted by Tony Shaw. John Roberts retained the men's championship title, beating Craig Jones 21-16 in a thrilling final, while in the ladies' blue riband event, Rene Silcox bowled superbly to beat last year's singles champion, Joyce Howe, 21-15. In the other men's competitions, Chris Bronham and Alan Whitehouse chalked up success in the pairs, Graham Hughes, Mike Jackson and John Roberts lifted the triples trophy, while Tudor Harries, Charles Davies, Colin Wynn and Steve Reese retained the fours. Meanwhile, in the ladies' section, it was a good weekend for Collette Bethwaite and Viv Kerrison, who almost swept the board, being victorious in not only the pairs, but triples with Betty James and rinks with Betty and Mair Marquiss. Betty and Mair also won the Over 60s pairs. In the juniors, there were 13 entries in the Under 15s mixed singles competition. It is wonderful to see such a younger element take up bowls. Sam Anderson was the eventual winner for the second year in a row, and he and runner-up Matthew Dick had spectators enthralled with their bowling. Other singles champions were Chris Court in the Under 25s, John Baggott in the Over 60s, Jo Shewry in the ladies' Over 60s and John Roberts in the Adam and Eve. Terry Lamkin appeared in the most finals, five in total - and from four of them took home the silverware. Club chairman, Lewis Hilling, was delighted with the organisation of the event and wishes to thank all the bowlers who entered, with special congratulations to the winners. I would also like to thank Mike and Tony once again for all the time and hard work they put in to making it a very successful tournament. A presentation evening was held at the club on Wednesday when the winners and runners-up were presented with their trophies by club president, Hugh Davies, and his wife, Mair. Afterwards, members enjoyed a buffet, which rounded off yet another successful indoor bowling season.
