A new £15,000 high ropes course has been opened at the Carmarthenshire County Council run Outdoor Education Centre in Pendine.

Council chief executive Mark James officially opened the course last Wednesday during a charity fun day at the centre.

Mr. James said: "I'm pleased to have the opportunity to open this fine new facility at Pendine. It will be great for Carmarthenshire's children and adults alike to have the opportunity to safely take on the physical and mental challenge that the course offers.

"The high ropes course is going to be a good facility for the local community and the county as a whole for years to come."

The facility is an aerial assault course consisting of wooden beams, ropes, pulleys and safety harnesses.

Reassuringly, as it stands at nine-meters tall, the course is completed under the supervision of the trained centre staff, who are on hand to ensure the safety of those taking part.

Mark James said: "I know from my experience on the course that when you are at the top looking down, nine meters feels very high indeed."

Centre manager, Gethin Williams said: "This is a fantastic new facility which will be worked into our programme of activities from September onwards. We expect it to be really popular with everyone who visits the centre.

"The course is really flexible in that we can adapt it for different activities including races against the clock and point scoring games."

Carmarthenshire County Council provided the funding for the purchase and installation of the course.

Leisure executive board member Clr. Clive Scourfield said: "Carmarthenshire County Council is committed to providing quality recreation and leisure facilities throughout the county. The investment in the high ropes course will help to expand the range of activities available at Pendine Outdoor Education Centre."
