Last weekend, the Saturday Swingers of Tenby enjoyed their annual tour. This year the party were based at Barnstaple in North Devon and they basked in glorious sunshine throughout the trip.

The renowned Saunton Golf Club was the venue for the first two rounds. Here there are two fabulous links courses within 3000 acres of Braunton Burrows between the River Taw and the Torridge estuary. Both courses take full advantage of the land's natural features to create holes with considerable individuality.

The Swingers were allowed to play off the white tees on both courses and Friday's game was over the youngest of the two excellent layouts, the West, which was opened in 1975.

Rookie tourist, Phil Mumford, was victorious on the first day with a fine 34 points, including 22 points on the back nine. Second and third were Paul Heywood and Richard Ormond with 32 and 31, respectively.

While the West is a wonderful course, the East (1919) is very special. It was in immaculate condition and the slick undulating greens were a joy to putt on. Heywood's form continued and he needed a par four on the last for a gross 73, two over par, but unfortunately he double-bogeyed in front of a rather noisy group of spectators on the nearby terrace!

This blip allowed Mike Wainwright to claim the winner's medal thanks to a great back nine which equated to 24 points for a total of 38 points, beating Heywood by one. John Bowhay was third with 32 points and this put him into joint second with Wainwright after the second leg, albeit they were now seven points adrift of Heywood, who had twice before been Swingers' Tour Champion, at Kilkenny (1999) and Arklow (2003).

On Sunday, the Tour moved on to Mendip Spring Golf Club, near Congresbury, about 12 miles south of Bristol. This parkland course was opened in 1992 and it boasts over 12 acres of lakes and water features, plus hundreds of trees.

Mike Anthony, who, for some unknown reason, improved as the tour progressed, posted an early 36 points. In fact, over the weekend he scored 26 points over his first 27 holes and 54 over the second 27 holes. His score made him an easy winner from Heywood and Gary McNeilly, who each had 31 points.

Heywood's total of 100 points over the three rounds equalled Jon Webb's record aggregate in Tramore last year. In the 54 holes played, he had an impressive 32 pars and three birdies. Bowhay's steady consistency was rewarded with his second runners-up spot in three years and Ormond sneaked into third as Wainwright wilted.

As for Webb, he went from 'champ to chump', although he did score a creditable 29 points on the final day. He is now looking forward to wearing the society thong next year.

Barnstaple proved to be an ideal base for the tour and the Swingers recommend the excellent Royal and Fortesque Hotel in the centre of the market town. A thoroughly good time was had by all, but this was of course mainly due to the superb courses and the magnificent weather.

Aggregate scores: Paul Heywood 100 pts, John Bowhay 90 pts; Richard Ormond 87 pts; Mike Wainwright 85 pts; Gary McNeilly 82 pts; Mike Anthony 80 pts; Viv John and Dave Llewellyn 79 pts; Neil Webb 77 pts; Phil Mumford 76 pts; Dai Cope 75 pts; Phil Keating 74 pts; John Stenson 71 pts; and Jon Webb 68 pts.

Footnote: It was decided that the 2007 Tour will be to Llandudno in North Wales and Richard Ormond is now collecting deposits.
