Mick Quirk led the service on Sunday evening, which included an interesting talk on Psalm 8 by his son-in-law, Mark. He pointed out the perfect symmetry of the psalm. It paints a picture of the greatness of God, creator of the universe and centres on the question 'what is man that you care for him?' before showing how man has been given a high position in creation, despite his smallness. Quoting a Swiss theologian, Mark said "you do not say 'God' by saying 'man' in a loud voice."

Some praise songs followed, accompanied on the piano, starting with 'Blessed be the Lord God Almighty,' a song which came to its composer, Bob Fitts, at an uncomfortable time of his life and ministry and came very close to being forgotten for ever, as he had not written it down.

Reading from Ephesians, chapter one, Mick talked about the name given to Jesus as it appears in older translations: 'The Beloved.' It was a name the Father used of Jesus during his life on earth, showing how greatly he prizes his only Son and what it must have cost to send him to the cross for the sake of a sinful world.

A precious son promised by God, Isaac had been about 22 years old when Abraham was told to sacrifice him on an altar. Of course, God spared Isaac, whom Abraham loved. His own son, Jesus, he did not spare, however.

"It was the Beloved Son who said 'foxes have holes, birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head,'" taught Mick.

"It was the Beloved Son who carried his cross to Golgotha, and the most amazing thing in human history is that the Father did not rescue him. Rather, he took the sins of the world (which he hated) and laid it on the one he loved above all others."
