Hesed is a word that appears many times in the original Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament) meaning covenant love, loving-kindness and mercy.

A variety of worship songs were sung and prayers offered during the service on Sunday evening.

Mick Quirk talked briefly about the initial opposition Billy Graham met with from the established church before his evangelism became better understood.

In Acts, Chapter11, Cornelius, a God-fearing Gentile, is visited by an Angel. Cornelius needed to hear the good news about Jesus, but the pastor in his talk pointed out that he did not hear it from the angel. That was, and still is, the job of Jesus' followers: "Billy Graham, Mick Quirk, you and me."

Cornelius, who was not used to spiritual experiences, had no trouble in accepted the word of an angel, but the apostle Peter, when he was confronted with a vision of unclean animals to eat, said "no, Lord!" - a contradiction in terms. It was only after the third time of seeing this that the "shekel dropped" and he realised he had to abandon his scruples of Jewish tradition and accept Gentiles into his home. He left with them to meet Cornelius and soon he was in the middle of a crowd of Gentiles praising God with new languages given by the Holy Spirit! He was even persuaded to stay with them, although the absence of a kosher kitchen and the possibility of 'bacon for breakfast' would have appalled him.

When Peter returned to Jerusalem, he had a frosty reception. His friends rebuked him for ignoring Jewish tradition. But they changed when they heard about how the Holy Spirit had entered the Gentile believers. "Who was I to think I could oppose God?" he remonstrated.

This Sunday's service is at the usual time of 6 pm, in the Avenue Centre, Greenhill Avenue, Tenby.
