Shechem, one of the cities of refuge, was the subject of Rev. Peter Richmond's sermon during the service of evening worship in the Avenue Centre.

The city, located in what would now be called outer Nablus, was where Abraham and Jacob had built altars, and Solomon's son was crowned. It became the first capital city of the northern kingdom of Israel. In Jesus' day it was the holy city of the Samaritans, known as Sychar, where women today still carry water jars on their shoulders.

In fact, 'Shechem' means 'shoulder.' It is a reminder of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who carries back the straying lamb on his shoulders, and of whom it was prophesied: "the government shall be upon his shoulders."

The service included songs, prayers and a short message from Mick Quirk. This Sunday's service is at 6 pm. All are welcome. Telephone Pastor Peter on 01646 681805 or visit http://www.hesed.co.uk">www.hesed.co.uk for more information about Hesed.
