During last Sunday's service, the pastor, Rev. Peter Richmond, gave an interesting talk about Kadesh, one of the six cities of refuge. It was in Galilee, near the foothills of the Golan Heights, on the present-day border between Israel and Lebanon.
When people in Jesus' day discussed whether he could be the Messiah, they asked "how can the Christ come from Galilee?" This was because there was a heavy proportion of Gentiles (non-Jews) living there. But Isaiah had predicted the Messiah's arrival from "Galilee of the Gentiles."
Before Jesus, there was only one prophet who came from Galilee: Jonah. Jesus predicted that his generation would be given the 'sign of Jonah'; he would be buried in a tomb like Jonah in the whale, but on the third day rise again. Jonah's name means 'dove,' so it is significant that a dove descended on Jesus when he was baptised.
Kadesh means 'holy'; Jesus was referred to as the Holy One. In the same way as Kadesh was a refuge for those who had caused death accidentally, so Jesus is a refuge for sinners who repent, and his Church is called a 'holy nation.'
This Sunday's service is at 6 pm in the Avenue Centre, near Tenby Library. All are welcome. Visit http://www.hesed.co.uk">www.hesed.co.uk for the latest news, events, sermons, music samples, etc.
