After reading James 3:6, where the tongue is described as a destructive fire, preacher for Sunday afternoon, Rev. David Cardwell, spoke about the tongues of fire which appeared on the day of Pentecost. Peter was a Gallilean fisherman and would have been no stranger to bad language; when he was being questioned about his association with Jesus, he had denied it with oaths - yet the Holy Spirit had given him a "new refinement of speech" and he was able to preach an eloquent sermon that caused 3,000 people to become disciples that day. It is held that in mining communities during the Welsh Revival there were difficulties getting the pit ponies to do as they were told; they did not understand the new clean language of their owners. David described the gift that enables many Christians to praise God in other languages. Some Christians who would call themselves 'Calvinists' have cast doubt on the practice known as 'speaking in tongues', but David read evidence in the service that was written by Calvin himself, in which the reformer validated and approved of the gift described by the Apostle Paul. The pastor, Rev. Peter Richmond, led Pembrokeshire Prayer for the Suffering Church on Tuesday, which was held at Penuel Baptist Church, Manorbier. Hesed services are held every Sunday at 4.15 in Carrington's Restaurant, The Atlantic Hotel, Tenby.
