One of the requirements of God's promise to forgive his people and heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14) was that they humble themselves before him. On Sunday afternoon in Carringtons Restaurant, Pastor Peter Richmond talked about what humility means. The New Testament speaks of clothing yourself with humility, and the language depicts the kind of overall apron that a servant would wear. While this clothing did not bring honour, it did at least have a protective quality; in the same way humility protects you from excess praise as well as excess criticism. "It's not spineless or weak," Rev. Richmond said, and illustrated it with the examples of Moses, Jesus and The Apostle Paul. Humility involves thinking of yourself with sober judgement, being honest about strengths and weaknesses, being prepared to do work, even if it is not your forté, and recognising that everyone is superior to you in some way or other. "The church is not the place to advertise our talents and giftings," continued Peter. "You may be a great flower arranger, but if the church needs a prison visitor, you may need to use that lesser skill." Hymns included 'Meekness and Majesty' and 'Little is Much when God is in it.'
