The project aims to encourage the community to develop their understanding of Penally's local heritage and the part that it played in World War I.
.Penally History Group welcomes everyone to join in and to discover the social and military aspects of the village during the Great War.
Tony Galvin, chair of the Penally History Group, said: "Come along to one of our awareness raising sessions, bring information and photographs to add to our knowledge and build an interesting exhibition later on in the year. We are keen to involve everyone who would like to contribute. Our plans include creating an on-line database, recording oral discussions, creating a schools information pack and researching into the families of the service men and women from Penally who served and died in the Great War.
"Penally has an important military camp and at this time an area on Giltar Headland was used to train troops on rifle ranges and in trench warfare - remains of these facilities can still be seen!"
Explaining the importance of the Heritage Lottery Fund support, head of HLF in Wales, Jennifer Stewart, said: "The impact of the First World War was far reaching, and touched and shaped every corner of the UK and beyond. The Heritage Lottery Fund has already invested more than £46million in projects - large and small - that are marking this global Centenary; with our new small grants programme, we are enabling even more communities like Penally to explore the continuing legacy of this conflict and help local people to broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world."
