Mr. Anthony Standing was the worship leader last Sunday. He gave a warm welcome to the congregation and a particular welcome to Rev. Dr. David Pusey, who retired from the pastorate at Hebron three years ago. Rev. Pusey also brought greetings from Mrs. Pusey and read from John 9 v1-11. The pianist was Miss Helen Standing and the welcome steward was Mrs. Janet Roberts. With the use of OHP illustrations, Mrs. Standing told the young people how the heir to the kingdom of Israel was on the run from King Saul. His hiding place had been discovered, but David never doubted that God would make him king one day. Some of David's family and men who had been wronged by King Saul came to join David. They protected the city of Keilah from the Philistines. The king was so jealous of David's success because the Lord was with David. David and his men were on the run again and hid in a cave. The king happened on the cave and went inside. Because his eyes were unaccustomed to the dark, he did not notice the men at the back of the cave. David crept up to the king and cut of a piece of the king's robe. As the king was leaving the cave David called after him and showed him the cloth in his hand. Then the king realised that David had only ever been loyal to the king, protecting him and the Israelites from their enemies. 'Now I know,' said the king, 'you are the Lord's anointed one.' The king and his sons died in the next battle against the Philistines and God's promise was fulfilled. David was only 30 years old when he became king. He had faced many dangers since Samuel had anointed him king, but David knew that he could always rely on the promises of God. Dr. Pusey said how pleased he was to be with the Hebron family again, though now he only knew about half of the congregation. It was good to see that new people had joined the fellowship and Hebron was still serving the community. The blind man had all the evidence he needed about who Jesus was. 'I was blind, but now I see.' Blind people have aids to help them: guide dogs, canes, and textured pavements to help them get about and Braille to help them to read. The blind man in John 9 had his own routine, including getting to his begging pitch. His world was limited to touch, smell, and sounds - not an easy existence, but it was normal for him. The blind man trusted Jesus. He did as Jesus said and went and washed. He overcame the obstacles on his way, then went home being able to see. The Pharisees thought they could see the answers, but they could not see Jesus' purpose for what He did. Only through knowing Him can we have a restored relationship with the Father. The vast majority of people don't see God in their lives. Our lives can be enhanced and changed by focusing on Him. Jesus is the light of the world. This Sunday is Mothers Day. You are warmly invited to the Family Service at 11 am. A youth orchestra and singers will be sharing in worship.
